Nice bit of fault finding you did there Bob. It's nice when you find a fault that yo7 can actually see... - Today

Is this it?
-
Nope and nope, it's a tricky one to spot but once you know it's there you can't miss it. You'll probably need to blow the image up a bit but it is high res so it won't go blurry.
-
I was the big hitter ‘of the time’ who decided to let red rose win it as it was getting a bit silly…it had no back door when the rose picked it up I think, which would have really annoyed me…another back door lost for a kids bike ramp I suppose..
-
I an see 8 holes so maybe a small sound chip missing or resistor block ?

Lack of solder on the pads? -
Well it's hot, hot , hot in the workshop but this one made me sweat even more. All the usual rotten stuff had been swapped out and the board burst into life. On checking the sound it wasn't well at all, like one of the lines was missing to the synth chip or it was faulty. A new chip proved it was blameless and as the 74LS541, which also connects to the same lines, had already been swapped out it wasn't that either. A fair while later a continuity test found the issue, can you spot it? Ignore the patch wire that was to fix a different fault.

That's a very expensive conversation piece unfortunately. Can't believe that another one hasn't surfaced. I remember when this came up for sale on eBay, must have been 20 years ago and all the big hitters (of the time) were up against one another for it. Went for about £1100 IIRC which was a record at the time. It was tucked away in some blokes shed for years, bet he couldn't believe it when it raised over a grand! 😆

Aww,ok mate. Thanks.

I have checked the rom dat and unfortunately they are not in there
-
Would be fantastic to see if any roms from emulation exist for Barcrest mpu2 Number Nudger 2. If anyone can help, maybe we can get Andy's machine working at Red Rose Bowl. Then everyone who visits can get to play on this classic machine. Thanks Everyone 👍
-
Has Number Nudger 2 mpu2 been emulated? Would love to see it running at Red Rose. I think it has faulty roms in it?

some i hear put boards in the dishwasher or clean them under a tap, not something i would do as tap water has chemicals in it too. If I had to do that it would need to really be distilled water which is pure. But I have never done that nor would i ever use any water, it encourages more corrosion in my eyes (water + metal = rust)
-
just IPA, its inert and does a very good job, it does soak into the pcb substrate under the etch resist so cleans there as well and any excess just drys, where vinegar (acid) will just stay which isn't good and really bad for these chips with those tiny tiny legs, they will properly just rot away and fall off from the chip body

The board is going to be sonic cleaned next. But thank you for the info. Again, it's what I was advised by someone else- not from this forum. What do you suggest I clean the corrosion with if I get another scenario? -
I have done a few screenplays which are the same tech, they are not easy to get rerunning at all
-
others will also tell you once a 'vinegar treated' board is repaired with a soldering iron, it emits a horrible acidic smell which really isn't good for the repairers eyes or nose or anything really. if they have any sense should stop there and send the board back!, once it's been vinegar washed it never can be removed totally, acid is not good for component legs or the copper pcb. acid loves to eat copper no matter how much its been rinsed, it gets under everything and remains there, how you then test for PH neutral, or mix up a acid solution which will leave the PH neutral is not something it seems anyone does when using vinegar. I have, and never will touch any boards that have been vinegar washed, its easy to detect years later when the board goes wrong again too. its similar to saying....... i clean my cars paintwork with battery acid.

you do realise with vinegar you are putting ACID on the board which gets under chips and stays there storing up more damage not to far in the future?
