  2. Well, just worked out that holes in the reel are incrementing in binary exactly like the studs do in the motor driven wiper mech. That makes it really easy to match the symbols on the reel bands to their binary equivalent. Just one thing that almost caught me was remembering the sensors are at the back so I'll have to mirror what I'm reading at the front.

  3. Success. Switched it on and the reels were still spinning. The nudge/hold selector was turning, but the variator wasn't. I moved the variator cam by hand, closing the microswitch and the control timer completed its cycle. As I was about to check voltage to the variator motor, one of the connections came apart. The female spade had lost its grip. I very carefully tried to close it up, but it broke, as they invariably do. Crimped on a new one and we're back in business. Thanks for your invaluable help. 👍
