  2. Hi all Just recently started buying machines for home. Certainly re-living my youth but my kids are old enough to get in on it now too. Not overly mechanically minded but do enjoy understanding how things work. I’ll ask, you’ll answer & I’ll likely ask again until I fully get it 😁 Stu

A mystery yet to be solved!!

Have anyone ever heard of Blank Cheque by Barcrest? Same cab as Mirage, Cloud 999 etc. A lot of you are extremely knowledgeable about hidden gems. I'm pretty sure I am not the only one that has ever played this or even heard of it!!

    Alphanumeric dead display

Never knew they had that much voltage. Thought they were perfectly safe to go near when on

    Alphanumeric dead display

Ok so the MPU4 display will be no good for the MPU3?

    Alphanumeric dead display

actually just looking at the diagrams for 12v displays in barcrest the oscillator and transformer generates -40v for the display and 5.6vac for the heaters, so by upping the input to 15v for using that display on 15v for MPU3 that means the -40v becomes -50v and 5.6v ac becomes 7vac which is not too good for the displays I guess

    Alphanumeric dead display

yes because both MPU4 and 5 run on 12v for the display, mpu3 has 15v on the AUX connector for the displays, so if the high voltage side is around 90v at 12v input this goes up to 112v at 15v, also the heater voltage will rise too so the vacuum fluorescent displays will be well over run and would very likely have a much shorter life, but I do wonder if anyone would be bothered by that, it works lets leave it! lol

some of those display have that wire on them to keep the display from pulling away from the the board behind it

    Alphanumeric dead display

Oh you might be right thought they were fully backwards compatible, MPU5 are with MPU4.

    Alphanumeric dead display

don't you have to add a 12v regulator on the back of MPU4 ones like the MPU3 ones have as MPU3 work off 15v not 12v as MPU4 are so are well over run if that's not done!

Thanks Crest, I'm good with a soldering iron just pointing at what to do there have been a few on ebay too, but just not sure what would work/adaptable. If you do have one that'll be fantastic, just say how much matey

You've got an eagle eye, nice spot I'll check that out tomorrow see if it glows up, failing would you think its fixable or knackered? Cheers Andrew

    Alphanumeric dead display

Pretty sure I have one, but it’ll be MPU4 the connector will need to be changed

    Alphanumeric dead display

well someone has been there before you as it has wire wrapped around each end keeping the display to the board behind it! most likely the display heaters and the 90v generator (oscillator) is not working, look at it in the dark and you should see the faint red glow of the heater wires from one end to the other, but I don't think that will be there

    Alphanumeric dead display

Cheers Crest, yep one of the two. The display looks in good shape when compared to my Lucky Strike machine. I'm leaning towards the board being faulty, just no clue how or what to check tbh. If I can even modify (somehow a newer board off Ebay) I would give that a go too Its just a pain not having it working

    Another Maygay M1 board repair

well clearly the connector has suffered! looking close up at it the corrosion is there!! not easy to remove, the holes in the board are barely larger than the pins! took some time to get everypin loose before it would leave the board, bit it is free with no board damage Have some good quality Harting connectors on there way, gold plated over Palladium Nickel so should be good!

Possible that a board fault is causing no alpha, but could be alpha faulty
  19. Hi all Quick question, looking at replacing the dead display on the Chances Unlimited machine. I've checked the display on another machine and it isn't working sadly. I've looked at an old thread from 2015 and discussed was white sections in the corners, looking at the one have it doesn't look that bad, not sure if it's something else that might of gone pop!? Just seeing if anyone else has had a faulty display and managed to get it working, or replaced it with a newer display adapting it somehow? Thought I would ask the question Thanks all

    Red Eachway Shuffle has Landed

Loving the LED replacement tube bulbs, would like to do the same was that easy to do? I've looked on amazon and from the comments it does involve changing the wiring a bit?! Its looking fantastic, it such a brilliant machine love it

    JPM Poolplay classic

Just a heads up folks.. Danno has made my dream come true and released a gem of a layout over at DADsFME - JPM's Poolplay. For those who know me well you'll know I've been banging on about thiis since I found emulation and now thanks to Danno's extremely hard work and wizards coding its now a reality. Another Maygay M1 board repair

so prodding around with the scope found no activity anywhere! not even for the brief moment the reset tries to get the board running! the reset was not even on pin 20b of the program card! of course I immediately thought a bad track, but the reset WAS present on the underside of the M1 board at the 20b connector pin!! removing and inserting the program a few times and yes the signal was present back on the program card again! great I thought till it still would not boot!!! this time I found signals missing from a few address lines on the program card AND some data lines! again all correct and present on the underside of the M1 board as before! so it looks like having the board running with voltages passing through the main program card connector on the M1 board has now shown up more troubles with the connector this time! so It does look like the connector to the program card needs replacing! this has now finally decided to show bad signs of the corrosion left behind by the battery! oh what fun!!

    Another Maygay M1 board repair

well this is why I leave the boards running on test software for weeks! I came home earlier to find the board was no longer running and stuck in reset!!

    Bell Fruit closing

I thought this would happen once novamatic sold out to inspired, I would think time is also limited for the other subsidiary's, Inspired will just take the name and market games on the video based platform I would think.
