Special reserve project

Recommended Posts

I have recently purchased a very sick special reserve machine. I had never seen one before so it was not bought for memories of my missed spent youth.

I felt like it could be a good project to do so I thought I would post stages of work over the next few weeks/ months.

I was hoping to get some help and advise if I get stuck. Some parts are missing mainly the display card in the top glass and the game card.

first question is can anyone help on either of the missing parts? I will buy them, but I guess they are hard to find.

I don’t often post on the chat as I am not an expert on these machines but I know a couple of you have helped me out in the past.

the project is not to make money just to add to my small collection.

I will try and post a few pictures of the way it looked when I got it.

the plan is to make a new cab from what I have left from the old one. I reckon it’s at least 3” shorter than it started

I hope someone can help with the two parts to start with.

Not sure if I am up to doing many of these lol only put the t section on tonight looks better with it on.

Started covering the wood tonight. Think this will be a slow job but it needs to be done. The first bits have turned out ok. They are not perfect but much better than I thought they would look.

Well it’s been a few days since my last post as I have not been able to do anything due to other commitments. I have managed to solve my front door mistake by making a little bracket. It has work

Posted Images

Work has started on making a template for the sides.

I have decided to make the new cab out of 22mm chipboard flooring. £13.00 a sheet at b&q. The good thing being I can get all the insides cut to a standard width and all the same from b&q.

the pics show that I had to guess the correct height so it maybe slightly out.

I hope this is of interest to someone.

Good luck on the rebuild, it is a real challenge! I probably have got a spare mps game card, although it will need the roms sorting, that’s way above my ability 😂😂 let me know if you would like one.

Keep us posted on the progress 👍👍

WOW. Thats one hell of a project. Wish I had both the time and the patience to do something like this. The only project I have in the pipeline is putting the blinking christmas icicle lights up on the outside guttering for her indoors...

A question...

I loaded up the emulated version of Special Reserve DELUXE. The one in your project looks totally identical but doesn't have the DELUXE graphic. I was under the impression that the DELUXE version was the £4 Jackpot and the 'none deluxe' was £3 Jackpot. Sp what IS the difference?

Wow what an amazing start, the new cabinet will look great and is also taking shape already!

It looks a really challenging project that's for sure, I do have the un duluxed version of Special Reserve, so if you need any pictures or info for reference for yours just let me know 🙂

Its absolutely worth saving and bringing back to life as its a nice game and machine.

Hi guys thanks for all the great feedback so far.

I will keep you posted on the project but I am only doing a couple of hours a night on it if I’m lucky.

This weekend I am going to have a good go at it. I want to get the cab built. But not by the weekend! Them worry about the harder part.

I could make the cab quicker if I was just screwing all the wood together but I wanted to make it like it was using dowels or domino joints.

I have bought some vinyl wood grain for the sides so hopefully it will look good. I have done a sample and it does look good however I need to get it to stick better to the board so I have bought some wood sealant. I will try that one it once it arrives.

stef thanks for the display offer my mate text me today saying he has located one. However until it arrives I won’t have it.

I am guessing the power supply and board will also be u/s but I have spare units so that part will be ok.

thanks again and I will add some pics later.

cheers Wayne

You're exactly right, that's the only difference. JPM were notoriously lazy on their upgrade glasses - they didn't even bother to redesign the reel glasses to reflect the newer style fruit graphics that they had upgraded to!

I suspect that this machine has an original top glass but a new reel glass.
