Line Up Chris 787 Posted September 30, 2020 Share Posted September 30, 2020 Hi chaps I have an mpu2 Spotlight here. It goes into attract mode when I switch it on. It accepts coins and credits but when I press the start buttons it resets. I have noticed there's no power to reel 2 and reel 3. Checked every connection which is clean. Swapped out a reel deck-same fault. Swapped the red and greens- same fault! Swapped mpu2 board-same fault. Checked fuses on the board,both ok. Check psu fuse-ok! Checked earth wiring to make sure its not in contact with any other wires. I have pulled the psu out and everything looks solid and connected. Need another psu to try and eliminate that. Anything else I should check. Must be psu fault or the rom cart,although it goes into attract. Could do with a picture of the rom cart tbh. Any advice would be most helpful with thanks. midibob 694 Posted September 30, 2020 Share Posted September 30, 2020 Chris, what type ROM cart does it use? Some use the MPU1 type or the later larger MPU2 type which may or may not have a battery on it. I think there may also be another variant with just two ROMs on it. Sounds like you've been round the block a few times with this one! First thing is to make sure the main smoothing cap is OK. If it's the original blue LCR then chances it's either knackered or well below par. (possibly on your spare boards too!) If the 5v is good, which it sounds like it probably is, then the 15v supply must be good too. If there's no power to any one of the reels I would suspect their transistors first and 6820 next. having said that if the 6820 was duff I would normally expect it to stop it booting. (never say never though!) This is assuming all connectors and cables don't have any bad connections! Dry joints on the connectors are very common. The only other thing with these old machines is the switch wiring. All the switches are break to operate (not the coins accepts). If there's a broken wire/switch then you can get the most weird faults. Not sure if any of that will help you but if you need a pic of the cart for comparison just let me know the type as I've got a selection of pics I've saved as they've passed through the workshop. Put that VFS mpu3 deck into Spotlight and it still has no power to reel 2 and 3. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Link to post Share on other sites

midibob 694 Posted September 30, 2020 Share Posted September 30, 2020 Yep, that card is set up exactly the same as one of my pics. It's unlikely that's an issue as it runs and goes into attract. The MPU2 has a smaller white plug if I remember correctly although you could mod it although I woudn't advise it! I think the reel sets are identical (correct me if I'm wrong) so I would persevere as to why a: there's no power to reels 2,3 in the MPU2 and b: why your deck alarms in the MPU3. I would check the board on the reel deck itself and maybe swap for another as maybe something has gone on that, also might be the motors on the reels possible (but doubtful), or the reel sensors. Had a fault with my Rock on with the reels spinning and the machine locked up and alarmed. Paul Gee kindly looked at it and swapped the sensor boards on the reels and it worked. Also had an issue with Options Unlimited and Lucky Strick alarming on the reels (luckily mpu3 it lights up the hold button for the faulty reel). Swapped the reel sensor and that fixed it. Still has the same fault with 2 mpu2 boards,so I think another psu to see if this eliminates the fault. Link to post Share on other sites

So now I am suspecting bad ROMs. Or bad cart! The ROMs are on 8120 chips. Does anyone know if they are the correct chips for mpu2. Just wanna get this baby running again now! Thanks in advance.
