Latest Epoch repair- light battery damage.

The 5v line was is broken where it meets the 10uf capacitor. Right under the battery. Also binned the transistors and double diode.

The First repairs were the over/under via holes. These were corroded inside. The tracks looked ok but x2 failed the buzz test. Put a wire through all 4... all epochs seem to need this treatment?

Next up was the 5v power line repairs, with these you have to create something for the new caps to bond too. I've haven't got a set way of doing these yet. I like this way better than rivets. Anyone have a better way?

Also replaced the tranny's and diode.

Hi, I'm trying to get a boot chip (U10) list together corresponding to chip version to manufacturer... I think it would be handy information for anyone that likes Epoch based machines.

V0 *may not exist*

V1

V2

V3

V4

V5 Impulse boot chip (early cab)

V5c Maygay

V6 Maygay boot chip (+some global)

V7

V8 Global boot chip

V9

V10

It would be great if everyone could check their machines and help get a community list going.

What it is if a manufacturer wants security he can design his game program to only work with his own boot chip version.

So technically aren't interchangeable between manufacters, some may half work. Others for clones might be common between a few machines. If your replacing an mpu, you should always transfer over the boot chip with the Roms.

Epoch is regarded hard to fix but it's my view that things like this get totally overlooked and people get frustrated. Sometimes it could be as simple as didn't change the boot chip over and the machine will never work.

That's why I'm thinking a list may help...particularly for the more exotic  manufacturers that used Epoch like Gemini... or just the odd bastard games.

(Bit like how we needed the s61.5 pal for your Indy Roms 🙂)

I've updated the list though thanks Darren- hopefully we can get more information in.

Will need to remember that from now on mate I usually just change EPROMs over and not the PIC chips.

epoch psu repairs I did are here

https://www.fruitemu.co.uk/ib/index.php?/topic/20769-epoch-mk2-and-mk1-psu-repair/

I looked into the boot chip versions, sadly never got very far as no one really knew about them to help, my idea was to find the fastest and best version to get them made, it was something like v4 booted faster than v6 or something like that, cant remember much now, the project never happened

Hi Andy awesome Glad you're back mate!

I'd not seen your Psu thread mate so will defo read that word for word.

It'd be great if you can do some more threads at some point if your not to busy. Aswell as the boot chips im trying to understand the spark sense variable + antenna and what Q3 is doing if you have any ideas?

Cheers, I actually popped in to answer cyberbob on his mpu4 boards I had lots of problems with getting them sorted for him, really time consuming faults too! I will try but to be honest I have not done anything more since those mpu4 boards and the lamp rig pcb of leds i think i posted about. sort of lost the will abit!

I cant see Q3 in the circuit diagram in the epoch manual, the circuit diagram doesn't cover everything and nothing to do with the spark protection is on it, so don't know really

Ahhh ok mate no worries and cheers for the previous threads...I've been trying my best to repair them how you do it!

Literally just brought this one back to life just now this evening. It was an easy one but they all count so thanks again Andy, wouldn't have even got started without your repair threads 😎

This might be handy trouble shooting here's a quick vid of an Epoch board trial, if you look closely you can see Q3 is not fitted.

Q3 seems to be part of the spark sense (reset) circuit and switches the circuit to ground. If this happens the actel chip it's not getting it's high 5v wake up signal and the system remains dead.

Q3 had failed on this one so was stopping this board from running... by removing it's also disabling the spark sense circuit so could be handy for establishing any problems there in the future. This is not perminant btw 😎
