Castle Big Fifty Repair

Recommended Posts

Despite the battery damage to the MPU, the RAM chip is happily holding it's data from one day to the next. The only unusual thing with that is that I snipped the battery off a few days ago...

How long do RAM chips normally hold data with no power?!

I didn't think they held it AT ALL, maybe a capacitor is holding it? Louie or MidiBob will probably have come across it before :)

I think the board has made it's own battery from the leaked battery contents lol

It's slow progress but the Sentinel mech has now been cleaned and routing issues have been addressed.

Someone else's attempt at fixing the acceptor gate, now fixed by just straightening the left of the spring:

The leaf spring in the separator had also been messed around with, making the gate too stiff for the solenoid to move. Fixed by reshaping the spring to match a good one!

After all that, acceptance is still very poor on any coin other than the old 50p, probably just down to wear and tear. Time for recalibration I think!

I've not had the chance to do any more work on this yet but a 10 minute play did result in a nice £26 streak...

A good video will happen at some point, probably once I have it positioned alongside its siblings!

Also, people have previously said that if you run out of credits mid streak then adding more causes a "continue yes/no" before being progressing to the next "£2 yes/no"; this doesn't seem to be the case. Adding more credits just allows you to continue where you left off. A different software version to what people remember, perhaps? I'll try to capture it on video...

Looks good mate, I’m sure it will be. So far your tips have not only made my reel bands clean and scratch free but also the screens in the car! Polywatch, I’ll remember it this time!

watching as always with interest.

I have some of those dot matrix units if you need any NOS. The brightness may differ but your welcome to some if needed. Nothing worse than a missing dot ;)

Thanks for the offer, what's the part number of those units? For the time being, I lifted some working units from a spare display board that happened to have the same "colour bin" segments. :)

More progress! I've sorted out the worst of the battery damage but there's still loads of logic ICs to replace on the bottom right corner. Still, she's working again for now, complete with a coin cell backup battery solution! :D

Will have to check mate. They are the ones used on BFM dot matrix displays.
